PRISMAP Workshop on Emerging Infrastructures

PRISMAP.png

General Overview

PRISMAP is a project, supported by the European Commission, towards the building of a European network for medical radionuclides. The main goal is to provide a sustainable source of high purity grade new radionuclides for medicine, involving from the onset upcoming major European infrastructures, to provide a single-entry point for all researchers active in this field.

To ensure sustainability and a good geographical coverage, emerging infrastructures receive special attention in PRISMAP. The organization of this workshop is one of the activities in support of the emerging facilities. The aim is to explore and develop their radionuclide-production capacity, to discuss radionuclides of interest to the user community and current/future R&D efforts towards the realization of new infrastructures and improved performances.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101008571 (PRISMAP – The European medical radionuclides programme).

Programme

The workshop starts in the morning of 31/03/2025 and will end on 02/04/2025 at noon time. It will include two days with presentations, poster exhibition and discussion, plus a half-day visit to SCK CEN infrastructures: MYRRHA, BR2 and CRF.

The programme includes sessions on the following topics:

  • Emerging Infrastructures - assessment for specific radionuclides
  • Mass separation for isotopic enrichment
  • Technical developments for radionuclide production
  • Round-table discussion on innovative radionuclides and user needs

A template for the abstract can be downloaded here.

Technical visits to SCK CEN

On day 3 of the workshop, a visit will be organized on the SCK CEN technical domain. The number of participants that can visit is limited to 40 people (of which 12 participants can visit BR2).

Please note that acceptance for this visit is subject to the approval of FANC (Federal Agency for Nuclear Control). To be able to draw up your security file, we would need a filled-out B1 document  and an extract of your criminal record from your country. This document has to be drawn up in English, Dutch or French. If this is not the case, it has to be translated by a sworn translator. All documents need to be sent to academy [at] sckcen [dot] be (academy[at]sckcen[dot]be) before December 18, 2024. Registration for the visit of MYRRHA infrastructures and Construction site remains open until March 1st 2025. After sending us the documents, you will receive an official document from our access control which has to be signed as soon as possible. Please also regularly check your spam inbox.

Centralized Radiochemical Facility (CRF): High-quality pharmaceuticals

The CRF building plays a prominent role in the production of therapeutic radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals. In other words: a key player in the medical world.
By 2025, the CRF facility will provide, among other things, an annual supply of high-quality lutetium-177 for the treatment of over 15,000 cancer patients in Europe. By 2030, this figure is expected to rise to as many as 60,000 patients.

    MYRRHA infrastructures and construction site

MYRRHA will be a unique facility in which research will be conducted into 4 applications: less toxic nuclear waste through transmutation, the production of medical radioisotopes, new reactor concepts and fundamental research. This is made possible with special technology: a particle accelerator driving a reactor with lead-bismuth as coolant, which means MYRRHA is an Accelerator Driven System (ADS), a research reactor powered by a particle accelerator: MINERVA, MYRRHA Phase 1.

  • SCK CEN - Infrastructuur BR2 (2019)

BR2: a (reactor) vessel full of medical solutions

The Belgian Reactor 2 is indispensable in the supply of medical radioisotopes. BR2 produces 25% to 65% of the global demand for the radioisotope molybdenum-99, used for cancer diagnosis. To analyse material aging, we subject nuclear fuels and materials to intense radiation. We do so with BR2 – one of the most powerful research reactors in the world.
