Overzicht

Nuclear operators (NPP's, research centres, waste agencies, fuel producers…) are liable for any damage caused by them, regardless of fault. They therefore normally take out insurance for third-party liability. In most countries this is compulsory, but the situation differs from country to country (in Europe and world-wide). The potential cross-border consequences of a nuclear accident require an international nuclear liability regime. Therefore, national laws are supplemented by a number of international conventions. And in particular in Europe there is a will to harmonize the nuclear liability regime.

This Topical Day aims at giving an overview of the current situation in nuclear liability for NPP and research centres, nuclear transport and waste organizations.

It will also highlight the recent evolutions in Belgium and at international level and discuss the consequences for the operators.

  • International Conventions: the basis of the nuclear liability regime
