Overzicht

The aim of this Topical Day is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for exchanging ideas and discussing recent results related to microbial communities in or near nuclear facilities. Special attention will be given to the bioremediation of radionuclides released to the immediate environment, the design of countermeasures to overcome biofouling, and new methodologies in the microbial community analysis of aquatic biotopes. Presentations will be provided by experienced as well as junior scientists working in this area.

Onderwerpen

During the Topical Day, the following topics will be treated:

  • Life and dead bacteria (and algae) as biosorbents of heavy metals and radionuclides;
  • Biofouling of SNF reservoirs and other water systems of nuclear installations;
  • Microbial diversity studies of radiation-intensive environments;
  • Metagenomic and bioinformatic approaches in microbial ecology;
  • Microbial resistance to ionizing radiation;
  • Microbial survival in pristine waters;
  • Novel microbes isolated from nuclear installations: applications and fundamental research.

Doelpubliek

The programme has been carefully designed to meet the interests of engineers, microbiologists, (radio)chemists, computational biologists, and biotechnologists.This Topical Day can also be of interest to professionals and students in microbiology, radiochemistry, bioinformatics, and biotechnology.
