Overzicht
As the final step of the nuclear facility life, decommissioning differs quite significantly from the operational period of life. Changing environment, development of new tools, “one shot” operations, production of huge amounts of waste, discrepancies between original design and the final layout of the facility, need for a global risk management with evolving radiation protection programme are some characteristics operators, health physicists, technicians are faced with when processing with dismantling operations. Moreover, regulatory requirements, choice for a dismantling strategy, safety and waste management, assessment and follow-up of doses, financial provisions and human resources management give still rise to many questions when a decommissioning project has to be set up.
The main objective of the training course is to provide the participants with the basic requirements regarding the management of a decommissioning project and to share experience from ongoing decommissioning projects.
This course frames within the European ELINDER project (European Learning Initiatives for Nuclear decommissioning and Environmental Remediation).

- Legal and regulatory framework
- Strategies for decommissioning
- Decommissioning project management
- Safety aspects and management
- Inventory, facility and site characterization
- Case studies (BR3,BN,Thetis)
- Dismantling operations
- Optimization tools
- Dose follow-up: individual and workplace monitoring
- Material management and characterization
- Final survey plan and safety report
- Decontamination techniques
Time will be made available for discussion as well as for practical sessions allowing participants to use optimisation tools or to take part to technical visits.
Doelpubliek
All stakeholders such as regulators, plant managers and operators, health physicists, technical service organisations (already involved by decommissioning operations or planning such operations in the coming months of years) should take benefit from this event whose main aim is to be as close as possible to the practices by sharing experience from ongoing decommissioning projects.

Knowledge of nuclear concepts is advisable, but not required.
Preparation
There is no preparation needed for this training course.

In terms of Knowledge
- Understand the complexity and multi-disciplinary process of decommissioning (safety, regulatory requirements, financial & human resources management, material management, etc)
- Grasp the difference between various decommissioning projects (Pressurized Water Reactor, Research Reactor, Fuel production plant)
In terms of Skills
- Develop the strategy and planning of a decommissioning project taking into account all important requirements and return of experience from other projects

The training will focus on interaction and dialogue. For this reason, the number of participants will be limited to 20.
All participants will be provided with:
- Course material in printed format;
- Lunches and refreshment breaks;
- Certificate of attendance.
Dinner is not foreseen during this course week. Cancellation with total refund is only possible until November 27, 2017.

The course is held at the Lakehouse of the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre, Boeretang 201, BE-2400 Mol, Belgium.
Rooms can be booked directly via the Lakehouse hotel.
Please note that the Lakehouse restaurant and bar doesn't serve any meals in the evening. Nevertheless you can order a sandwich at the reception desk of the Lakehouse during lunch break.
