Overzicht

Occupational, public and environmental radiation protection is a major challenge in the industrial applications of ionizing radiation. The use of devices emitting ionizing radiation and the handling of radioactive substances are not without risk, and radiation protection measures need to be applied to avoid, minimize and manage the potential detrimental effects following an exposure to ionizing radiation.

This 5-day training course offers an insight into various subjects involved in radiation protection, such as nuclear and radiation physics, radiobiology, detection and dosimetry. Next to the legal and scientific international radiation protection frameworks, the management of natural and artificial radiation sources in industry and healthcare are discussed, including aspects related to waste and disposal, and emergency preparedness.

Theoretical classes are complemented by practical exercises on the use of radiation measurement devices and the correct application of personal protective equipment. A technical visit to several SCK CEN's laboratories enrich and illustrate the acquired knowledge with the practice of real-life situations and demonstrate the translation to a practical ALARA approach.

As working with nuclear technology requires not only technical knowledge but also an insight into societal issues, a module is provided in which critical reflection and discussion about the philosophical and ethical dimensions of justifying and using nuclear technology are addressed.

Doelpubliek

The training is intended for persons (Master students, PhD students, professionals) working with radioactive materials or managing nuclear activities in their professional environment and requiring insight in fundamental and practical aspects of radiological protection.

This training session is eligible for 30 hours of continuous professional development in radiation protection for the prolongation of the certification of Medical Doctors for medical supervision (Art. 75 Royal Decree 20 July 2001).
Depending on the relevance for the personal function, this training session is also eligible as continuous professional development for experts in Health Physics (Art. 73 Royal Decree 20 July 2001).
A certificate of attendance will be provided after the training course.

Voorkennis

There is no pre-knowledge required.

Preparation

All participants will be asked to follow a short e-learning module prior to the start of the training.

This e-learning offers an introduction to some concepts of radioactivity and ionizing radiation and takes about 30 minutes.

Leerdoelen

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to

In terms of knowledge

  • Describe the origin and properties of ionizing radiation;
  • Give examples of applications of ionizing radiation;
  • Name the interaction mechanisms between radiation and matter;
  • Classify the main risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation on healthcare and environmental level;
  • Define the fundamental principles of the radiation protection system and her applications, as laid down in national and international legislation;
  • Have insight in the organization of radiation protection in regular and emergency situations;
  • Describe the different dosimetric quantities;
  • Name different measurement methods and equipment for environmental and personal dosimetry;
  • Describe the characteristics of Radon and naturally occurring radioactive materials, including the use of NORM.

In terms of skills

  • Use different measurement devices to characterize sources an measure doses;
  • Apply proper dose reduction measures: reduce exposure time, increase distance, and select and calculate shielding;
  • Develop contextual and ethical reasoning as a relevant skill when considering radiation protection issues.

In terms of competences

  • Apply the main principles of operational radiation protection on the work floor on a daily basis;
  • Be aware of the complexity of nuclear applications.
