The AISBL has been set up: MYRRHA welcomes international partners

20 September '21

"MYRRHA AISBL is a reality!", enthuses Hamid Aït Abderrahim, Deputy Director-General of SCK CEN and Director of MYRRHA. The deed of incorporation was signed on Friday. "17 September therefore marks the start of a new era for MYRRHA. One in which we can officially join forces with international partners to achieve our ambitions and goals!"

MYRRHA will become the world's first research reactor powered by a particle accelerator, and will tackle societal challenges that confront all countries. "This includes nuclear waste treatment or the fight against cancer with a new generation of medical radioisotopes, or fundamental materials research for nuclear fusion, among other things. International cooperation is essential if we are to come up with lasting solutions to these challenges", explains Hamid Aït Abderrahim.

Setting up the AISBL has made it possible to combine forces. "We are looking forward to welcoming international partners and having them officially join the project," concludes the MYRRHA director. The AISBL will oversee the project, keep a close eye on its implementation and set out the research programme that will be conducted during its operation. SCK CEN will be the nuclear operator of the multi-faceted research infrastructure.

The question then arises: which international partners do we have in mind? Who can become a member of this newly incorporated AISBL? Countries, research organisations and international institutions can become members.

Federal government support

The setting up of the AISBL comes in the wake of the federal government's decision to achieve MYRRHA's objective. To motivate foreign partners to get on board with the project, it provided financing of €558 million - on the condition that an AISBL would be set up for MYRRHA. That condition has now been met.
