Read SCK CEN’s brand new annual report ‘Highlights 2020’
SCK CEN proudly presents its brand new annual report 'Highlights 2020'! The focus of this edition is on 'breaking patterns'. We look at how scientists have traditionally embraced this concept and how 'ruptures' lead to scientific breakthroughs. We hope you enjoy reading it!
Each year, in its annual report, the nuclear research centre SCK CEN collects striking examples of fascinating developments in the fields it is active in. In this edition of 'Highlights 2020', the examples have one common denominator: 'Breaking patterns'. The inspiration came from... coronavirus. "In 2020, the coronavirus challenged us to reflect on the essence, to think and therefore to question existing systems and patterns," said Eric van Walle, Director-General of SCK CEN.
In times of uncertainty, creativity flourishes. "This comes as no surprise to us, as scientists. Breaking patterns enables innovation. That is also why we constantly question ourselves. It’s the reason why we dare to let go of what we already know and we dare to redraw what we had already designed. Many of our studies and projects are shaking up standards, including our own," he continued. In order to demonstrate this, the projects and studies were put into this annual report.
An attentive reader who takes the paper version will notice that the common thread was woven in every way possible. Did you know that in the printed copy:
- you can see the pattern of the cover literally change by sliding the poster out?
- the short pages in each chapter break up the smooth cut of the booklet?
- each article connects to the common thread in its own way (indicated in bold)?
