Discover SCK CEN’s brand-new annual report ‘Highlights 2025’

We're proud to present our brand-new annual report entitled ‘Highlights 2025’. In this edition, we invite you to join us at our scientific drawing board, where we shape a world in the making. A world in which nuclear energy contributes to a sustainable energy mix, nuclear medicine strengthens the fight against cancer, and science enables the efficient dismantling of nuclear facilities and the safe management of radioactive waste.

It's where ideas become concrete, designs become reality, and results become meaningful. Where we sketch the contours of a better world. Because a better world is sustainable, safe, and healthy.

Peter Baeten, Director-General of SCK CEN

What is Highlights 2025 all about?

With vision and skill, a draughtsman draws lines across the paper that later reveal a silhouette. What at first glance appears abstract gradually gains coherence and meaning. That is also the essence of our research. At SCK CEN, we aim to shape today what is still the future through nuclear science and technology. Our research starts from questions but is always directed towards impact. It is a continuous pursuit of solutions that are meaningful for people and society. In other words, we sketch the contours of a better tomorrow, and we do so every day. This annual report shows how we do that.

2025 in five contours

Sometimes, the contours of a better world begin with one simple stroke of a pen. An agreement that unites international partners in creating social impact.
Sometimes, contours solidify into concrete and steel. They are the foundation on which we gain scientific insights, innovate and renew.
Sometimes, curiosity leads the way. What comes out of it will eventually be applied in cancer treatment, nuclear safety and training.
Sometimes, contours remain abstract, until action gives them meaning. It is these trusted, precise actions – that we master thanks to our decades of expertise – that prove their worth to others day after day.
Sometimes, we see our drafts come to life beyond our site. Our ideas leave the lab and are translated by others into an application, a process, a production line. And we also contribute to existing concepts developed by others through our research.
