Three scientists, three stories and lots of puppies
What happens when you ask scientists to talk about their areas of expertise and then have puppies suddenly jump on their laps?
SCK CEN is launching its own version of "The Puppy Interview," a series of heartwarming videos in which our experts are surprised by a bunch of curious, furry four-legged friends. The result? Spontaneous conversations, real emotions and accessible science. SCK CEN aims to use this initiative not only to bring complex topics closer to the public, but also to show the people behind the science. With these stories, we also help highlight Dierenasiel Lommel, an animal shelter with whom we proudly collaborated.
Science with an unexpected twist
Liesbeth Van Laer on her research into radioactive waste and disposal
Liesbeth explains how SCK CEN is working on safe, sustainable solutions for radioactive waste that remains active for hundreds of thousands of years. As puppies snuffle curiously around her, she talks about how she is inspired by animals and nature: from clever adaptation to ingenious survival strategies. Her main message? "Curiosity is one of the greatest drivers of science."
Bjorn Baselet discusses radioligand therapy and cancer research
Bjorn is researching how radioligand therapy can eliminate cancer cells in a targeted manner, with minimal damage to healthy tissue. He manages to explain how this therapy works and how it can save lives while simultaneously being licked by an adorable puppy. Bjorn's advice to scientists as well as puppies: "Stay playful, keep asking questions and remain open-minded."
Đorđe Petrović talks about the safety of future reactors
Đorđe, aka "George," is a safety engineer working on the safety and licensing of lead-cooled, high-speed reactors. He explains how SCK CEN ensures that nuclear chain reactions are always under control. With the puppies beside him, he talks about how animals inspire him when it comes to collaboration: "Scientific progress is teamwork, just like ants ... or puppies."
Special thanks to the tail-wagging guest stars
The scene-stealing puppies come from Dierenasiel Lommel. We're pleased that this collaboration allows us to highlight a local organisation and show our commitment to supporting local initiatives.
