Visualizing Qualitative Data: Exploring Innovative Approaches for Improved Communication

Introduction

Qualitative research often produces complex relational data that requires innovative visualization techniques for effective interpretation and communication. This study seeks to explore and develop a visualization tool that emphasizes the representation of connections, patterns, and associations within qualitative data.

The choice of the data visualization software is flexible and can be decided according to the intern’s skills and preferences.

Objectives

- To develop and evaluate a new visualization tool to enhance the interpretation and communication of qualitative data.

- To assess the usability and effectiveness of the developed tool using data from a practical case study on sustainable environmental management.

This project will support an ongoing PhD study (https://www.sckcen.be/en/thesis-ongoing/social-dimensions-environmental-management-32b98962-ba97-eb11-80d4-ecf4bbc6e827), where qualitative data have been gathered on a case study in Italy. The data have already been analyzed using the qualitative data analysis software NVivo, but they need to be made available and easily understandable for different audiences.

Therefore we are looking for a master’s student who can help us with the visualization of such data, which include numerous and overlapping networks. The intern will help in the process of data visualization, by developing a system that could be replicated for future use in a practical and time-efficient manner.
