Calibrations and irradiations with gamma sources of Cs-137 and Co-60

Calibrations and irradiations are done with gamma sources of Cs-137 and Co-60 in terms of Kair and all derived operational quantities H*(10), Hp(10),  Hp(0.07), and Hp(3) following recommendations of the ISO 4037:2019 standard (015 CAL BELAC accreditation scope).  Slab, cylinder, rod and pillar phantoms are available. Irradiations and calibrations at different incidence angles are possible.

Multiple Cs-137 and Co-60 sources are available in different irradiators to cover the full dose rate ranges as follows (reference date 2021-05-05):

  • Co-60 from about 1 uGy/h up to about 95 Gy/h (reference date 2021-05-05)
  • Cs-137 from about 1 uGy/h up to about 2 Gy/h.

The Cs-137 and Co-60 sources are available in 4 different irradiators manufactured by Hopewell Designs Inc.:

  • GC-60 H horizontal 20o conical beam shape (Fig 1)
  • DS-20 panoramic beam (Fig 2)
  • GC-60 LT horizontal 40o conical beam shape designed for long term irradiations (Fig. 3)
  • G-100 radiotherapy grade beam with maximum beam opening of 35 cm x 35 cm at 100 cm distance (right pyramid shape) - more information

Cs-137 and Co-60 horizontal GC-60H irradiators

The irradiator has a 20o collimated beam, 4 Cs-137 and 4 Co-60 sources and it can be used at distances from 75 cm up to about 500 cm. Dose rates from about 1 uGy/h up to130 mGy/h for Cs-137 and from 1 uGy/h up to 6 mGy/h for Co-60 can be achieved (reference date 2021-05-05).

Cs-137 and Co-60 panoramic DS-20 irradiator

Panoramic DS-20 irradiator of LNK with one Cs-137 and one Co-60 source, for efficient irradiation of many personal dosemeters at the same time. The 100 cm, 150 cm and 200 cm distances are most used in routine. Dose rate between 50 mGy/h and 2000 mGy/h are possible for Cs-137 and between 17 mGy/h and 800 mGy/h for Co-60 (reference date 2021-05-05).

Calibrations-1.3

The Cs-137 and Co-60 long term GC-60 LT irradiator

The long term GC-60 LT irradiator of LNK, with 2 Cs-137 and 2 Co-60 sources and with 40o collimator opening and maximum distance of 19 m. It is designed for long term (days) irradiations of samples ( radioecology, electronic equipment) at low dose rates. Dose rates from about 1 uGy/h up to 300 mGy/h can be achieved both for Cs-137 and Co-60.
