O.S.C.A.R.: digital support for clearance measurements of buildings in nuclear dismantling
SCK CEN and MAGICS Technologies are combining their expertise to make clearance measurements more efficient, more reliable and fully traceable.
How do you make a time-consuming and error-prone process more efficient, more reliable and ready for the future? This was a key question in the development of O.S.C.A.R., an innovative digital solution from SCK CEN and MAGICS Technologies that supports and automates clearance measurements during the dismantling of nuclear facilities.
High demand for geopolymer training highlights global shift in radioactive waste management
A specialised EURAD2 training course on geopolymers for radioactive waste management, has drawn significant international attention. Delivered by SCK CEN experts alongside leading European partners, the programme reflects a growing global interest in innovative waste immobilisation technologies. With registration reaching full capacity in just 24 hours, the course underscores both urgency and enthusiasm in the sector. It also signals a broader transition toward alternative materials beyond traditional cement-based systems.
Renewed research and technical support partnership: SCK CEN and NIRAS-ONDRAF strengthen Belgium’s programme on radioactive waste management
Belgium's radioactive waste management programme has steadily matured over the decades, built on a long-standing and productive relationship between SCK CEN and NIRAS-ONDRAF. As the programme evolved, so did the nature of that collaboration: what had been for a long time a client-provider relationship has grown into a real partnership, formalised five years ago to better integrate R&D efforts on both sides. The goal was easy to say yet harder to build: a genuinely shared approach to support the Belgian programme, aligning the research priorities of NIRAS-ONDRAF and SCK CEN, translating needs into clear goals and objectives, and securing the infrastructures and competencies that Belgium must keep at home. Deciding to form a partnership is only the first step; turning it into reality requires more. Let’s explore how our partnership is structured and how it came into being.
