Roger Van Geen laureate gives inspiring lecture series

With a firm handshake, Peter Baeten, Director-General of SCK CEN, congratulated the newest laureate of the Roger Van Geen Chair. The chair awards scientific excellence in nuclear research and a special commitment to knowledge transfer. "This time, that honour goes to Edmond Sterpin, professor of medical physics. It is not only a recognition of his achievements but also direct encouragement for the future. We look forward to his continued, scientific impact," said Peter Baeten. The laureate explores (the future of) proton therapy in an inspiring lecture series.

SCK CEN - Overhandiging Roger Van Geen (2023)

Edmond Sterpin, a professor at KU Leuven and UC Louvain, is no stranger to the world of medical physics. He is primarily interested in the use of Monte Carlo simulations, automatic planning using artificial intelligence, adaptive radiotherapy and reference dosimetry. However, his name is inextricably linked to PARTICLE, the first proton therapy centre in Belgium. At this location, where six university hospitals and network hospitals work together, he coordinates research.

In his role as research coordinator, he is a driving force in the continuous improvement of cancer treatments. His dedication, both clinical and academic, are invaluable to the advancement of health care. Consequently, this led to the award of the "Roger Van Geen" chair. He received his award today. "We are pleased to congratulate the newest laureate of the Roger Van Geen Chair. This prestigious recognition rewards not only his outstanding contributions to nuclear research but also his commitment to knowledge transfer. We look forward to his continued impact in nuclear medical science," said Peter Baeten.

Through knowledge sharing, we can leverage the expertise of existing medical physicists and also inspire new generations to advance the field and improve patient outcomes

Knowledge transfer

The inspiring laureate will continue to share his rich knowledge and insights. "Medical physicists, with their unique expertise, play a pivotal role as the central link between various healthcare-related disciplines. Through knowledge sharing, we can leverage the expertise of existing medical physicists and also inspire new generations to advance the field and improve patient outcomes", said Edmond Sterpin. He has immediately backed up this intention with a fascinating lecture series as part of this chair.

"This handover kicked off the lecture series. And to anyone who missed this opportunity, I can reassure you, there are still opportunities to benefit from Sterpin's passion and expertise! In the coming weeks, he will explore other frontiers of (adaptive) proton therapy," said Michèle Coeck, Director of SCK CEN Academy and organiser of the lecture series.

These scientists were awarded previously

The “Roger Van Geen” Chair is awarded – at the initiative of SCK CEN – once every two years by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and the Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.–FNRS). It is granted to an eminent researcher in the domain of nuclear sciences and applications. Edmond Sterpin joins the list of distinguished scientists to receive the award. These are his predecessors: Joris De Schutter (KU Leuven - 1995); Roeland Baets, Piet Demeester, Peter Van Daele (Ghent University - 1997); Denis Flandre (UCL - 1999), Kristiaan Temst (KU Leuven - 2001), Pierre-Etienne Labeau (ULB - 2003); Steven Laureys (ULiège - 2006); Riccardo Raabe (KU Leuven - 2007); Paul Leroux (KU Leuven - 2009); Sebastien Couet (KU Leuven - 2011); Tony Lahoutte (VUB - 2014); Christophe Poinssot (CEA - 2017); Eric Salmon (ULiège - 2019) and Thomas Cocolios (KU Leuven - 2021).
