We are ready to build this accelerator. Are you?

Together with a large team of ambitious engineers and researchers, SCK CEN wants to develop new medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients and solve the nuclear waste issue by means of the MYRRHA project (www.myrrha.be). The MYRRHA project’s first implementation phase (start of commissioning scheduled for 2027) consists of a ≈170m long, superconducting, high power proton accelerator with one of a kind reliability and two target facilities for research into radioisotopes, radioactive ion beam physics and nuclear fusion reactor materials.
To help us achieve our ambitious goals, we are looking for a new team member to join the “Accelerator mechanics” group to perform mechanical design and study activities for the particle accelerator. While some accelerator components are still being designed, others are already being procured to be ready in time for installation starting in ≈2025.
You will work closely together with a CAD designer and with the support of the accelerator system experts, ATS project officers, and you will:

  • perform mechanical studies for accelerator mechanical component – static structural calculations, fluid simulations, thermal condition studies.
  • check mechanical integrity of complex assemblies of the accelerator components. Control of mechanical tolerances, constrains and materials of the accelerator components and assemblies.
  • develop the strategy for mechanical safety and reliability for components of the accelerator.
  • design (with help of the CAD designer) specific components, girders and supports of the accelerator.
  • perform technical coordination between the groups and units regarding mechanical related topic.
  • participate in the transfer and installation of a beam line test stand. The beam line test stand is currently installed in Louvain-La-Neuve.
  • develop and implement an overall mechanical safety and integrity strategy together with the group/unit head. (installation ≈2025 - 2027).

To join this frontier, you'll need

  • a Master in Mechanical Engineering (mechanical, mechatronics, … ) or equivalent.
  • minimum 5 years of experience as an engineer
  • experience in the standardization of the mechanical parts (requirements, procedures, materials, treatment)
  • experience in the design of specific and complex machines is considered a strong asset
  • experience in systems engineering is an additional asset
  • familiarity with a 3D CAD software (Creo, Ansys)
  • familiarity with international standards
  • knowledge of mechanical calculations (structural, CFD (strong asset), thermal)
  • experience in writing of technical documentation.
  • the ability to speak/write fluently in English
  • to be a self-managing team player with an eye for detail and a structured work approach
