SCK CEN inaugurates MaT building
Exploring the nuclear lifecycle
16 December 2024Last year, 10-year-olds inaugurated our Material Treatment Building. With 1,440 m2 of space, our new building will function as an innovative workshop focused on sustainable decommissioning and creating solutions for treating and conditioning radioactive waste. As such, we prevent future generations from inheriting this challenge. A vision through which we foresee the unlocking of a network.

The European Industrial Alliance on SMRs expresses confidence in lead-cooled SMRs
Exploring innovative nuclear systems
11 October 2024In parallel, Europe also expressed confidence in lead-cooled Small Modular Reactors. Our project was selected - along with eight other projects - by the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors. This European recognition is an important step that accelerates the development of the technology.

Belgian action plan is expected to give more patients access to innovative cancer treatment
Exploring nuclear medicine
19 June 2024In 2024, for example, we helped to spearhead a Belgian action plan for radioligand therapy. This action plan aims to give more cancer patients access to that therapy. Radioligand therapy is expected to improve the lives of 16.6 million people by 2040. The first step? Preparing the supply chain as well as the healthcare system for broad deployment.

SCK CEN addresses one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer
Exploring nuclear medicine
8 October 2024Does radioligand therapy with astatine-211 have the potential to knock out triple-negative breast cancer? This form of cancer mostly affects young women and is currently difficult to treat. Sometimes, a single question is powerful enough to bring 17 partners on board. As part of the new European project Accelerate.EU, we are spearheading preclinical research.

SCK CEN takes the lead in preclinical research focused on ovarian cancer
Exploring nuclear medicine
10 October 2024We are also at the forefront of preclinical research in the European project Thera4Care. As such, we are exploring the treatment effects of terbium-161 on ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is not detected in three out of four women until metastases have already appeared. Treatment is difficult in advanced stages. Our aim is to bring all the vital results to the forefront, hoping to ignite a surge in Phase 1 clinical trials

PanTera signs agreement with Bayer for the supply of actinium-225
Exploring nuclear medicine
13 February 2024Bayer, the German pharmaceutical giant, has partnered with PanTera – our joint venture with IBA – for the supply of actinium-225. The parties signed a capacity reservation agreement. This means that, at specific times in the future, Bayer will have access to a set production quantity of actinium-225 for supply and use. The agreement lays the foundation for a series of preclinical studies.

Opening of SpectronRx's European facility draws closer
Exploring nuclear medicine
17 October 2024SCK CEN research centre is internationally renowned as one of the leading producers of medical radioisotopes. This success led to US company SpectronRx setting up its first European radio labelling facility on our premises. By formalising our cooperation with an official and binding contract, we move one step closer to its opening. And so, there are not one or two, but now three key players in nuclear medicine in close proximity to each other.
Discover how we ...
-
1. ... build knowledge and expertise
Science takes root in the fertile ground of accumulated knowledge. To give new ideas the space to sprout and flourish.
-
2. ... strengthen knowledge and expertise
Science demands ongoing innovation in research and infrastructure alike. To strengthen our foundation and, in turn, enhance our social impact.
-
3. ... merge knowledge and expertise
Science requires a broad perspective, so that it can learn from and connect with other fields.
