BNEN welcomes its largest intake of students in 25 years
The master-after-master programme in nuclear engineering is becoming ever more popular
Twenty-five years ago, nuclear research centre SCK CEN and 5 – subsequently 6 – Belgian universities set up the BNEN inter-university master-after-master programme. This programme is designed to ensure a steady stream of new nuclear engineers and to safeguard Belgium’s nuclear expertise in the long term. Today, that remit is more relevant than ever. This is reflected in the enrolment figures: more students than ever are choosing BNEN.
Prof. Carine Michiels receives the Chair ‘Roger Van Geen’
At the initiative of the nuclear research centre SCK CEN, the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and the Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) award the Chair ‘Roger Van Geen’ to an outstanding scientist in the field of nuclear science and its applications. This edition was presented by Prof. Carine Michiels of URBC-NARILIS (University of Namur). She is making a significant contribution to the fight against cancer by deciphering the biological effects of radiation.
On Tuesday 30 June 2026, Prof. Michiels will receive her award. She will also deliver her inaugural lecture, 'How cell biology and radiation physics met to boost radiotherapy'. It also marks the start of a fascinating lecture series that will take place this autumn. Register now!
Nuclear Summer School in the Low Countries sets the bar high
SCK CEN Academy and Nuclear Academy get talented young people interested in a nuclear career
29/08/2025 – Belgium and the Netherlands are both relying on new nuclear plants for their future energy supply. But if you want new reactors tomorrow, you are well advised to recruit a new generation of nuclear experts today. That message is clear to both the SCK CEN Academy and their Dutch counterpart, Nuclear Academy. It is why they teamed up to organise a Nuclear Summer School, with the baseline ‘Your gateway to a career in nuclear’.
