World Café “Loodrecht naar nucleaire innovatie voor de toekomst?”

Advanced nuclear technology: “a distant dream”? Come join us to discuss and reflect on nuclear innovation!

The Mol-Dessel region has been known for decades as Belgium's atomic region. The country's first nuclear reactor was built here. We pioneered the processing of spent nuclear fuel and we contribute to the safe storage of radioactive waste.

Lead as a coolant

The world does not stand still. In nuclear research, there is also a strong commitment to innovation. For several years, SCK CEN (the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre) has for been investigating new types of reactors that use liquid lead as a coolant instead of water. While the idea of using hot metal to cool a reactor may sound surprising, scientists are convinced that it offers significant benefits.

Did you know?

At the request of the Belgian government, SCK CEN plans to build a lead-cooled small modular reactor by 2035 to demonstrate the technology. This European cooperation includes partners from Romania and Italy.

Participate in our World Café

Are you curious about what it means to cool a nuclear reactor with lead? Would you like to discuss the potential benefits and challenges of this innovative technology? Then come to our World Café on lead-cooled nuclear reactors. In an informal setting, we will discuss the applications of this technology and what we, as citizens, expect from decisions on these new nuclear reactors.

Everyone is welcome, but places are limited. Don't wait too long to %20robbe [dot] geysmans [at] sckcen [dot] be (register).
