Radiological site characterization
Accurate in detection, confidence in decision
Radiological characterization can be essential prior to the construction of nuclear or industrial facilities (Zero Radiological Impact), during their operation and especially in context of the remediation of historically contaminated sites/legacy sites. Especially in site remediation, accurate data on the distribution and physical, chemical, and radiological properties of contaminants are critical for informed decision-making. This information supports risk assessments, engineering designs, and project planning for environmental restoration. Additionally, ongoing characterization plays a key role in evaluating the effectiveness of cleanup methods, guiding adjustments to remediation strategies, and ultimately verifying the success of restoration efforts.
SCK CEN can provide various services for radiological site characterization, offering state-of-the-art solutions to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of environmental assessments.
SCK CEN provides thorough measurements through:
Why partner with SCK CEN?
- Expert guidance: We offer tailored advice on the most effective sampling methods within regulatory guidelines, ensuring safe handling of waste and protection for both workers and the environment.
- Initial screening: Our preliminary screenings quickly determine the presence and levels of radionuclides, providing you with immediate insights.
- Detailed characterization: We accurately identify the specific radionuclides present, their quantities, and their distribution, giving you a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
- Impact assessment: Our in-depth characterization supports robust impact assessments, addressing critical concerns such as potential groundwater contamination and the extent of contamination beyond the site.
What can we do?
- Dose rate surveys of sites using well-calibrated instruments
- In-situ gamma-ray spectroscopy using high and/or medium resolution detectors depending on radionuclide complexity (HPGe, CZT, NaI, CsI, ...)
- Map larger areas using car-borne or airborne gamma-ray spectroscopy. SCK CEN operates his own drones equipped with tailored radiation detectors and has performed numerous helicopter surveys using large-volume scintillation detectors
- Borehole depth profiling in-situ gamma-spectroscopy using CZT, NaI or CsI detectors
- Sampling of soil, vegetation, air, water, sediments... followed by analyses of the samples in the laboratory
- Active radon measurements in air, soil and water using the RAD7 or other detector systems
- Leaching tests
The sky is not the limit
Flexible to use, accurate in measurements. Radiation detection drones can very precisely map aerial radiation values over a nuclear site or larger area without human intervention.
