Feasibility study on large-scale production of Actinium‑225
In 2021, the European Commission formally approved the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) for Belgium. Using this European funding, the Belgian government aims to finance 119 investment projects and 29 reform initiatives to help the country recover from the COVID-19 crisis. One of these projects focuses on securing the supply of actinium-225. This page provides an overview of the achievements made as a result of these investments.
SCK CEN has conducted a feasibility study on the large-scale production of actinium‑225 (²²⁵Ac), a key radioisotope for next-generation cancer therapies. Funded under the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility, the project evaluates how Europe can develop a sustainable and reliable supply of this critical medical isotope.
Why this matters
225Ac is used in targeted alpha therapy (TAT), an emerging treatment that delivers highly precise radiation directly to cancer cells. As demand for this therapy grows, securing a stable supply of ²²⁵Ac has become a strategic priority to ensure continued access for European patients.
Key results
- Feasibility of large-scale production demonstrated
- Full production chain validated (target → irradiation → separation)
- Innovative technologies developed and patented
- Clear pathway towards industrial implementation
Main achievements
- Safe handling of ²²⁶Ra enabled (radon trapping system)
- Advanced irradiation technology developed
- Scalable target system designed
- GMP-compliant radiochemical process established
- Concept for a dedicated production facility delivered
Impact for Europe
- Strengthens European autonomy in nuclear medicine
- Supports access to life‑saving treatments
- Positions Belgium as a key supplier of ²²⁵Ac
