Overview
Ionising radiation offers various applications in industry and in the medical sector. It is a challenge to sufficiently protect the workers, public and environment against possible detrimental effects of radiation.
This training session is part of a series of sessions organised in the framework of the continuous professional development in radiation protection and for radiation protection experts. The aim is to discuss the most recent status of relevant subjects in radiation protection for professionals responsible for the supervision of exposed workers, public and environment.
This CPD session starts with an analysis of the complexity of nuclear risk governance to then link these insights to the question of how approaches to science as policy advise and political decision making could ‘generate societal trust’. The idea is that this trust would need to be generated ‘by method instead of proof’, regardless of whether the outcome of decision making would be acceptance or rejection of the technology. Case studies thereby inspire theoretical reflection and vice-versa.
The overall aim of this CPD session is to stimulate thinking and dialogue with respect to
- the complexity of the relation between ethics, science and technology in the case of nuclear technology applications;
- the moral foundations of health risk governance and medical ethics in general and of radiological protection in particular;
- the practical implications for research and policy.
Special attention will be given to the context of medical applications. The focus in this context will be on an approach rooted in the medical tradition and ‘alert to contemporary social expectations’ [1], with the aim to provide course participants with a practical framework against which they can assess the safety and acceptability of medical procedures, including patients’ concerns.

Audience
All professionals who are directly involved in the control or supervision of radiation protection issues, such as:
- Medical Doctors for medical supervision;
- Experts in Health Physics.
This training session is eligible for 3 hours of continuous professional development in radiation protection for the prolongation of the certification of occupational doctors. A certificate of attendance will be provided.

Required Knowledge
Knowledge of the basic principles of ionising radiation is recommended, but not required.
Preparation
No preparation is required for this training course.

The registration fee is 223,85 EUR, VAT included (185,00 EUR + 21% VAT).
