RADAR: Safe maintenance in confined radioactive environments
Use case example
As a real Swiss-Army-Tool for radiological applications, RADAR is useful in all types of scenarios. Explore this page to discover how RADAR can help you with your projects.
RADAR workflow
1. Create 3D environment or import scan
Upload CAD files, 3D scans, or use intuitive tools to easily replicate any radiological working environment.
2. Define radiation source
Define three distinct radiation sources:
- Point-source: the pump itself
- Linear source: pipes
- Radioactive contamination
3. Create scenarios and routes
Simulate technician routes and operations to calculate effective dose down to the second.
4. Simulation
- Route A: Technician walks directly to the source and spends 7 minutes in the hotspot zone to decouple the pump.
- Route B: A single lead screen is placed to shield the technician during the preparatory steps before decoupling the pump.
5. Visualisation
- Route A: total personal dose is 450 µSv, which risks exceeding maximum limits.
- Route B: total personal dose is 190 µSv, well below the maximum limit.
Conclusion
Route B is more than 50% safer, without increasing the timeframe. RADAR generates all the documents needed to obtain work permits, prepare for operation, and train technicians.
