Diversify

For the sake of wood production, from the second half of the 19th century the vast heathlands of the Kempen were extensively forested with Scots pine. The result? Very monotonous Scots pine forests on our grounds. To this day, significant areas of Scots pine forest can still be found.

With a view to the future, it is wise to diversify with multiple tree species. This makes a forest more resilient to possible pests and drought, and it also increases biodiversity. We are already preparing for the future: we have planted young trees under the Scots pines throughout our grounds. Those trees get all the time they need to grow. By the time the Scots pines reach the age to be cut down, the young trees will be ready to watch over our grounds.
