KAERI and SCK CEN extend collaboration

30 June '23

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and SCK CEN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Wednesday 28 June 2023 for the next 5 years, until 2028. With that agreement, the two sides are strengthening cooperation in nuclear technology at our site. The Memorandum was signed during a visit to SCK CEN by Mr Han Gyu Joo, President of KAERI, and Peter Baeten, our Director General. The delegation was accompanied by a number of Korean nuclear energy experts and colleagues from SCK CEN.

The two organisations will be cooperating more closely in research reactor fuel technology, decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear facilities, nuclear application technology and nuclear education and training.

SCK CEN paid particular attention to the KIMQI project. In that context, SCK CEN is conducting tests and irradiations so that the Korean research institute can obtain a license for its low-enriched uranium silicide-based fuel.

On Wednesday, the delegation also visited the BR2 reactor, where the first phase of test irradiations of Korean silicide fissile materials has already been successfully completed.

With this agreement, the two organisations are building on the Memorandum of Understanding they already signed in 2008. In it, the focus was on nuclear energy. So now - with the renewed MoU - they are broadening their horizons and will actively cooperate in multiple areas.
