Researcher

Are you passionate about bioinformatics and research?

In our interdisciplinary bio sciences team (BIO team) human cells, mice, plants and microorganisms are exposed to ionising radiation and subsequently examined with the most advanced molecular and cellular techniques to bridge knowledge gaps in the short and long term biological effects of radiation. With this research we aim the development of innovative solutions for the medical -, nuclear- and space sector.
To support us in this effort we are looking for an experienced senior bioinformatician to join our team (https://www.sckcen.be/en/bioinformatics) . You will contribute to the strategic research of SCK CEN on the biological impact of radioactivity and radiation in medical, nuclear- and space- applications and take responsibility for developing and guiding the bio-informatics research. More specifically, your position will entail the following:

  • You contribute to the strategic research of SCK CEN on the biological impact of radiation in medical, environmental, nuclear and space-related applications within the BIO group.
  • You contribute with your bioinformatics expertise to different research projects by developing customized bioinformatics pipelines for high-throughput sequencing data obtained from different species (human, mouse, plant, microbes)
  • You develop your network with research and valorisation partners, and take the lead for, or contribute to, the design and writing of new research proposals to obtain research funding, and collaborations with scientific partners and industry
  • You will initiate new PhD projects and coach/mentor students during their doctoral research, or their Master and Bachelor thesis work.
  • You will take the lead in scientific reporting via publications in international journals, and presenting results at national and international conferences and symposia.
  • You use your technology watch skills to follow trends in new technologies and bioinformatics approaches, and you are the driving force for the integration of novel bioinformatics tools, for next-generation sequencing technologies and (statistical) data analysis, single-cell sequencing, pathway analysis, etc..
  • You help developing and guiding the bio-informatics research within the BIO group towards valuable applications,  with a clear vision for the future.
  • You use your knowledge for coaching and training your colleagues on bioinformatics and biostatistics within their research and project proposals.
  • You are interested in the organization of specialized courses (data management, statistics, programming, functional genomics, ..)
  • You support the maintenance of the bioinformatics infrastructure including data back-up, server maintenance, server user management, bioinformatics software installation and updates.

To join this frontier, you'll need

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology,
  • Hands-on-experience with bioinformatics tools for the data analysis of high-throughput biological data;
  • Fluency in the analysis of large datasets and Unix/Linux-based high-performance computing environments, preferably with solid knowledge of shell scripting (e.g., sed, awk);
  • Working proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Perl, R, Python , Java
  • Having a professional work attitude, be ready to take responsibilities and be quality-driven;
  • Be an independent researcher, team player and be able to work in a multidisciplinary environment;
  • Experience in conducting statistical data analysis ;
  • Meta-analysis and data mining based on public data bases  is a strong plus .
