SCK•CEN signs collaboration agreement with two Japanese research centres

Derrick Gosselin, chairman of SCK•CEN and Eric van Walle, director-General of SCK•CEN, signed a collaboration agreement between Japan and Belgium in the field of nuclear science and technologies.

The Memorandum of Understanding between SCK•CEN and CRIEPI (Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry) highlights the collaboration on safety aspects of nuclear reactor pressure vessels, inclusive materials testing. SCK•CEN will use its recently renewed BR2 reactor; CRIEPI will place its microstructure investigation tools at disposal. The research on structural integrity of the reactor vessels is of major importance to guarantee the safe exploitation of the Belgian and Japanese nuclear power plants.

The collaboration agreement between SCK•CEN and its Japanese counterpart JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Acency) is an extension of the agreement that was already signed in 2006 and in 2012 (read the news of 4 January 2012). Both centers will continue to work together intensively within various areas such as accelerator driven systems as MYRRHA, high-level radioactive waste disposal and decommissioning of nuclear installations, especially the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
