FEMaS-CA: Fusion Energy Materials Science – Coordination action

Objectives

FEMaS-CA is a coordination action within the EURATOM 7th framework program for nuclear research and training. The objective of this project is to create a European research environment in which fusion materials science for the realization of fusion power can be carried out with optimum effect. The project will strengthen the application of advanced materials characterization methods which is an essential ingredient for the successful development of fusion reactor materials in Europe.

FEMaS-CA will form a strong European network involving institutions outside of the present fusion program, within which bi- and multilateral collaborative activities shall be carried out which will contribute to the formation of lasting and efficient European structure for fusion materials science and development.

Work packages

The fusion materials selected for this project are tungsten, ODS steel and functional coatings which have a barrier, isolation and/or corrosion protection function. However, the focus of the project is more on the analysis techniques which are grouped in 5 different work packages:

  • Work package 1 is called `radiation damage: benchmarking experiments´ and deals with modeling and in particular the benchmarking of modeling results..
  • Work package 2 is for `synchrotron-based characterization methods´
  • Work package 3 deals with `neutron-based characterization methods´ (SANS, NAA, PAS,…).
  • Work package 4 relates to `transmission electron microscopy´ based methods.
  • Work package 5 is for `advanced mechanical testing and characterization´.

SCK•CEN is only involved in workpackage 4. It should be noted that the division in work packages is not too strict and information from other work packages can be obtained and contributions to the other work packages are possible if advisable.
