Job description

SCK•CEN is developing the design of the multi-purpose irradiation facility MYRRHA, a flexible fast spectrum research infrastructure conceived as an Accelerator Driven System (ADS). It consists of a proton linear accelerator (linac) of 600 MeV, a spallation target and a multiplying core with nuclear fuel, cooled by liquid lead-bismuth.

According to the MYRRHA implementation plan, a 100 MeV linac will be constructed first. In a second stage it will be upgraded to 600 MeV and later connected to the MYRRHA reactor.

Within the MYRRHA Phase 1, the main objectives are the design, construction, commissioning, operation of the 100 MeV proton linac coupled to a target facility with applications in fundamental research, in the production of medical radioisotopes and in material research for fusion.

The Accelerator Design and Test (ADT) Unit is responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of the 100 MeV superconducting linac, in close collaboration with several national and international research institutes and industrial partners.

The selected candidate will be a member of the  ADT Unit and will be based at SCK•CEN Mol.

Job Description:

As Cryogenics System Engineer for the 100 MeV superconducting linac, you will be responsible for the global engineering coherence of its cryogenic systems. Therefore you will:

  • own the cryogenic engineering activities and the system integration for the entire development cycle (design phase, engineering design, prototyping, industrialisation, installation, operation, maintenance, improvement);
  • lead the engineering supervision for the industrial production and installation of the cryogenic plant;
  • provide cryogenic engineering support to different linac equipment designers;
  • ensure the achievement of the required performances taking into account the special emphasis on quality and reliability, within a defined cost and safety frame;
  • study and evaluate risks arising from the cryogenic system with consequences on the global accelerator operation and performance;
  • build strong interactions (collaborative and commercial) with industrial companies and research institutes in the domain of large cryogenic installations;
  • lead the conceptual and detailed design activities for the buildings housing the different cryogenic subsystems, and the definition of all the needed infrastructures;
  • interface with other engineering services of the MYRRHA project for defining and applying common global system engineering requirements — in particular, build a strong technical collaboration with the Accelerator System Engineer;
  • ensure the full documentation of the system (requirements, technical specifications, acceptance criteria) in view of the procurement phase (suppliers selection, follow-up), the production phase (assembly, tests, integration, commissioning) and the exploitation phase.

Required qualifications

  • master’s degree in Physics, Engineering or related field; a PhD in Physics is appreciated;
  • broad understanding of low temperature physics, knowledge on large scale cryogenic systems and techniques;
  • formal background knowledge of cryogenic systems and infrastructures intended for experimental fundamental research (e.g., condensed matter, high energy physics);
  • experience in design and hardware development of cryogenic systems and the integration of cryogenic subsystems;
  • a basic understanding of particle accelerators is an asset;
  • professional background in an R&D environment (in industry or in research);
  • a positive “can do” attitude, able to show commitment and to inspire others;
  • pragmatic, dynamic, resistant to stress, rigorous;
  • good interpersonal skills: communication, coordination and reporting;
  • excellent oral and written skills in English. Knowledge of Dutch and/or French is an advantage or willing to follow courses;
  • willing to regularly commute between Mol and Louvain-la-Neuve;
  • willing to travel abroad (up to 15%), periods of one to two weeks leave are possible.
