Job description

  • Ensure scientific support for the development of new bioinformatics tools, including:
    • optimisation of the methods for RNA-seq, genome (re-)sequencing and genome (re-)sequencing;
    • implementation of metatranscriptomics and shotgun metagenomics pipeline;
    • development of a bioinformatics pipeline for epigenomics for plant, animal and human cells;
    • development of bioinformatics pipelines for new analysis technologies including proteomics and new sequencing platforms (e.g. NanoPore and PacBio);
    • integration of different data types (e.g. flow cytometry and 16S rRNA metagenomics, phenotypic arrays and gene sequencing).
  • Ensure technical support and specific assistance for the research units of the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences expert group, including:
    • optimisation of the back-up of the different high-throughput data (microarray, sequencing, microscopy, etc.);
    • maintenance and user management of the bioinformatics servers and installation of software;
    • analysis of high-throughput data for which a standardised pipeline already exists (microarray, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, etc.);
    • assistance with setting up the proteomics hardware and software from ICT/data perspective.

Required qualifications

  • Master in bioinformatics, computational biology or similar or master in molecular biology, microbiology etc. combined with a very strong record of high-throughput data analysis or master in bioengineering sciences with knowledge of molecular biology and bioinformatics;
  • knowledge and experience of working with unix/linux is required;
  • expert in one or several programming or scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Java, C++, … is required;
  • hands-on experience of high-throughput data (genome sequencing, RNA-seq, microarrays, …);
  • knowledge of (bio)statistics and database management is a plus;
  • knowledge of a statistical processing program, preferably experience of R / BioConductor;
  • sense of responsibility, professional work attitude and quality conscious;
  • independent but also a team player who can work in a multidisciplinary environment;
  • good scientific communication skills and experience in editing scientific presentations and publications;
  • good knowledge of English, Dutch and French.
