EUROTRANS: European Research Programme for the Transmutation of High Level Nuclear Waste in an Accelerator Driven System
Among the prior research and development topics of EURATOM 6th Framework Programme is the management of high-level nuclear wastes. In particular, the development of technical solutions of nuclear waste management is considered important.
Objective
The general objective of partitioning and transmutation is the reduction of radiotoxicity, volume and heat load of high-level nuclear waste which has to be put into final repositories.
The implementation of partitioning and transmutation of a large part of the high level nuclear wastes in Europe needs the demonstration of the feasibility of several installations at an “engineering” level. This is the general objective of two integrated projects: EUROPART for partitioning and EUROTRANS for transmutation.
Scientific and technical domains
The large EUROTRANS integrated project (EC contribution = 23 M €) is divided into five scientific and technical domains:
- DM1, coordinated by SCK•CEN, develops a reference design for the European Transmutation Demonstrator ETD
- DM2 provides validated experimental input on the coupling of an accelerator, a spallation target and a subcritical blanket
- DM3 develops and qualifies the fuel concept for the ETD
- DM4 improves the knowledge in Heavy Liquid Metal technologies
- DM5 improves and assesses the nuclear data simulation tools
