Workshop:  October 8-10, 2008

Programme

8 October

08:30

Welcome
Welcome provided by the Host Organization – a representative of SCK•CEN – and IAEA (P. Dinner). Provide overview of the workshop, objectives, approach and agenda. Introduction of participants and lecturers.

09:15

Overview of related Agency activities in the field of decommissioning (P. Dinner, IAEA)
Provide an overview of related Agency documents and initiatives pertaining to decontamination and dismantlement.

09:45

Break

10:00

Decommissioning Activities at SCK•CEN (L. Noynaert, SCK•CEN)
Provide an overview of the various decommissioning activities carried out at Mol with specific reference to the decontamination and dismantlement techniques applied and lessons learned.

11:30

Presentations by participants (Part I)
Summary by each participant of i) the current state of their decommissioning work and schedule of activities, ii) the main technical challenges as they understand them for the dismantlement of their facility(ies), iii) their personal expectations of the workshop. Participants should bring for presentation, relevant photos, sketches etc.

12:30

Lunch (Cafeteria)

13:45

Presentations by Participants (Part II)
Continuation of session (Part I) – assuming 10-12 participants and 12-15 min/person.

15:15

Break

15:30

Preparing for Decontamination and Dismantlement (S. Boden, I. Verwaest, SCK•CEN)
Radiological and physical characterization as a prerequisite for decommissioning tasks. Data management. Presentation and discussion of typical organizational and procedural measures to be taken in preparing to decontaminate/dismantle (e.g., elements of work planning, document retrieval and review, practical issues to “watch out for” from experience).

19:00

Supper Clubhouse
Supper offered by SCK•CEN

9 October

Decontamination

08:30

Overview of Decontamination Techniques
Video + Laboratory Decontamination Demonstrations (Part I)
(K. Van den Dungen, J. Dadoumont, L. Noynaert, SCK•CEN)
Provide a description of approaches, results/experience, advantages/limitations for a range of decontamination approaches for process and structural elements of nuclear facilities as applied at Mol (and elsewhere). Decontamination pre and post-dismantlement. Discuss means and accuracy/reliability of confirming decontamination levels achieved.
Provide visual examples of the techniques in practice through a combination of video/photo examples followed by laboratory/workshop demonstrations.

Part II

12:30

Lunch (Cafeteria)

13:45

Field Tour CBZ (Central Buffer Zone) (R. Cornelissen, SCK•CEN)
Opportunity to observe facilities/components e.g. “before” and “after” decontamination.
Visit to gamma-camera, and discussion of its role in planning dismantlement.
