Training course on environmental risk assessment, the ERICA tool and mixture toxicity

Course:  October 3-5, 2011

Introduction & general course objectives

Organised by the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre in collaboration with Horia Hulubei” National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering

The need for a system to demonstrate that the environment is protected from ionising radiation is now broadly recognised at the international level. Increasing production of nuclear energy and plans for further new build make it now more necessary than ever to align methodologies for the assessment of Environmental impact of ionizing radiation with the state-of-the art in European context.

One part will focus on Environmental Risk Assessment with emphasis on the ERICA integrated Approach to assess the impact of ionising radiation on the environment, with its emphasis on safeguarding of the structure and function of ecosystems. This system combines elements of environmental management, risk characterisation and impact assessment that have been built upon the basis of an EU-wide scientific consensus. Secondly, we will introduce some of the approaches and methodologies used in studying and predicting mixture toxicity effects.
